3 Simple Rules

3 simple rules to follow when you quit smoking. Preparations: RULE #1 - Get Rid Of The Stuff

Throw away all cigarettes, matches, and lighters (except maybe one for lighting stoves and campfires and such).

Clean all ashtrays and decide whether you should toss them or give them away. Why should you keep them?

Clean and deodorize your house, car, and clothing. Replace or repair anything with particularly noticeable scorch marks.

pick up the butts! In the yard, on the sidewalk, along the fence. Establish your tobacco-free sanctuary.

You must secure an agreement from friends and family not to smoke in your house, in your car, or in your face for 1-3 weeks.

RULE #2 - Change Playgrounds And Playmates

"Definition of insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results."

"If you hang out long enough in a barber shop, you are bound to get a haircut."

"Lie down with dogs and you will get fleas."

In the same train of thought as these examples, you will need to break free from the "smoker's circle".

Arm yourself with some favorite magazines, plan ahead so you can take brisk walks, lie down for a cat-nap, or tune into a specific radio or TV program at regular break times.

You must deliberately avoid that "smokers circle" outside the break room. Walk deliberately to a non-smoking cafe at lunchtime. Seek out the non-smoking group at break-time and dig up the effort to connect, familiarize yourself with them.

This, Too, Shall Pass ...

You can and you will focus on something besides your own misery. Rome was not built in a day, neither was your addiction. You must slog through some tough days, as best you can, without lighting up. Thus you will be establishing an important foundation, a pattern of behavior, a starting point or landmark, for your recovery from cigarette addiction. You will be laying the first cornerstones of your smoke-free life. How exciting!

By no means should you lie to yourself and think you can take break or even associate with the smokers while they are smoking. You will gain the ability to be around smokers smoking in the not-so-distant future. But not until then, you will know when you are O.K. with it.

Pray to God for relief and strength. Sit down, fold your hands, bow your head, and pray for strength and relief.

RULE #3 - Take Care Of Yourself Now

Make a conscious effort to reap the rewards of the smoke-free life style. You will begin to identify yourself as a smoke-free citizen. Suggestions...

Keep your hands busy! Throw yourself with renewed vigor into your work. Seek out new angles on your work duties, which could use improvement. If you find your work depressing, it may be time to look for more interesting work.

Choose, cook, and eat your sustenance with a more lively and engaged attitude. Sharper taste and smell may be early noticeable benefits. Explore the cheese cooler (bleu, Camembert, brie, Muenster, feta, etc.). Try spicing up your dishes with peppers, garlic, curries, fish sauce, etc. Take your vitamins and minerals for maximum recovery. Drink a glass or two of 100% grape juice every day (all the good pro-anthos, tannins, and anti-oxidants of red wine without the alcohol). Eat bananas, apples, melons, and tomatoes. Your body has a lot of healing to do!

Confirm in your mind a commitment to exercise and enjoy it. Walk that bike path! Bike that walk path! Run, if you can muster the energy. Push It! Brisk exercise will release those ultra-friendly, shining-star hormones called "Endorphins" into your blood stream. Endorphins trigger Adrenaline, and soon you will be stronger, steadier, and smiling. Endorphins work naturally to provide relief from addiction to cigarettes. No kidding! It's a promise!

Be sure to notice and study the majority of people just like you, going through life, actually LIVING without cigarettes, dawn to dusk.

Ultimately, you should find peer groups, which do activities other than smoking cigarettes. Being honest with yourself now, recognizing your triggers and weak points, and making decisions to protect your newfound freedom from smoking, will all increase your chances of continued success and give you a clearly defined role in your own addiction recovery.

It's your life, take it back! Your destiny does not have to include smoking. So long, Tobacco Road! It's been real. But now I'm movin on!
