Cigarette Smoking & Teens

Facts and Trends:

The number of teenagers who smoke is on the decline, according to a 2002 study. But one in four high school seniors reported on a survey that they smoked in the last 30 days.

Don't think your child is too young to try smoking. Elementary school is a good time to start talking to your child about not smoking. Conversations on an ongoing basis drive the point home. 20 percent of high school students report smoking a cigarette before age 13. If your child is 15 and doesn't smoke, she's still at risk, keep talking to her.

2002 Study: Percent of teenagers who smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days:

  • 8th Graders - 10.7 percent
  • 10th Graders - 17.7 percent
  • 12th graders - 26.7 percent

These numbers are too high, considering the deadly effects of tobacco and the difficulty in quitting. Prevention is the surest way to reduce these numbers. Preventing teens from smoking in high school increases the chances they won't smoke as adults. One-third of all kids who try smoking eventually become addicted and smoke daily. More than 80 percent of adult smokers started before age 18.

Why should you talk about not smoking with your child? YOUR CHILD'S HEALTH IS IN DANGER!

ADDICTION
  • The younger people start smoking, the stronger is the addiction to nicotine.
  • Symptoms of addiction like strong urges to smoke, anxiousness, irritability, having tried to quit and fail, can appear within days of "occasional smoking".

  • Nearly all (9 out of 10) lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Smoking is a major cause of fatal and debilitating heart disease, emphysema, and stroke (heart attack). Smoking increases the risk of oral and esophageal cancer and gum disease.
  • On average, smoking a pack or more of cigarettes each day cuts seven years off your life.
  • Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the U.S..
  • Second-hand smoke spreads 43 chemicals known to cause cancer.

"My parents would be very disappointed if I ever smoked. They make the rules clear. No smoking in their house or car. They don't approve of teens smoking at all. " -Jason, teenager- Oregon
