What's your question?
Why do people smoke?
But, "there must be ONE good reason to
smoke..."
But, "won't smoking make me look
cool?"
But, "won't smoking make me look grown
up?"
But, "smoking doesn't cost much
money."
But, "I'm young and healthy, I won't DIE from
smoking!"
But, "you have to smoke a long time before you
get health problems."
But, "it's MY BODY, who would I be
hurting?"
But, "what if that pregnant lady
smokes?"
But, "don't most people smoke?"
But, "is it ever too LATE to quit?"
Why do
people smoke?
People have many different 'excuses' for smoking. People start to
smoke because they...
- Believe it will change their image.
- Think it will make them more popular.
- Want to experience the physical effects smoking
produces.
- Started when they were young and have become addicted.
Cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco contain these three harmful
and addicting compounds, as well as many others.
- Nicotine
- Tar
- Carbon Monoxide
Smoke inhaled harms delicate tissues in the mouth, throat,
breathing tubes, and lungs. 85% - 95% of the chemicals in smoke
stay in the lungs. Some of the chemicals, especially nicotine,
become addicting.
There are no good reasons to smoke!
But,
"there must be ONE good reason to smoke..."
Fact is, I can't think of a single one. Get the facts!
SMOKING...
- is the cause of more than 390,000 premature deaths every
year.
- is the single most preventable cause of disease. These
diseases include emphysema (lungs clog up), lung cancer (lungs
die!), mouth cancer (ugly!), heart disease (heart can't pump
blood), and cardiovascular (veins and arteries clog up)
disease.
- is the leading cause of home fire deaths. More than 2000
people die every year from fires caused by careless smokers.
AND...
- Tobacco smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals
- 200 of these chemicals are deadly poisons!
- If you still think that there are some good reasons for
smoking, read on and learn the truth!
But,
"won't smoking make me look cool?"
Not on your life! The truth about smoking is ugly!
Smoking...
- Stains your teeth yellow and takes the sparkle out of your
smile.
- Stains your fingers yellow due to constant handling of
cigarettes.
- Speeds up the aging process
- Causes premature wrinkles and makes you look up to ten years
older than you really are.
- Causes bad breath - even after you brush your teeth, your
breath will smell.
- Makes your hair and clothes smell bad. Chemicals like cyanide
and formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies!) in the smoke
stick instantly to hair and clothes.
Don't believe advertisements that make smoking look
cool or glamorous... it's NOT!
But,
"won't smoking make me look grown up?"
Smoker's don't look mature OR smart. A child who smokes does not
look more mature. He or she only looks like a child who is trying
to look like a grown-up.
- In one study, a group of high school seniors were asked some
questions about smoking:
- Only 7% of those interviewed thought smoking makes a person
look 'cool' or grown-up!
- 2 out of 3 people (2/3) said they preferred to date people
who don't smoke.
- Smoking cigarettes only makes you look silly. What's grown-up
about smoking? Nothing!
But,
"smoking doesn't cost much money."
Oh, yeah? Smoking costs a lot! If you smoke one pack of
cigarettes a day, you will spend more than:
$14 a week,
$56 a month,
and $673 a year to support your habit!
That's real money that could be used for something cool that you
want or need! It's not fun to waste money! With the money you
save by NOT smoking, you can buy:
A large pepperoni pizza every week!
New CD's of your favorite group every week!
A color T.V. in less than a year!
New clothes or athletic shoes!
Video games!
But, "I'm
young and healthy, I won't DIE from smoking!"
This is true, as long as you never START smoking! Help your
heart, don't start! Smoking causes: emphysema (lungs clog up),
lung cancer (lungs die), mouth cancer (ugly!), heart disease
(heart can't pump blood), and cardiovascular (veins and arteries
clog up) disease.
Smoking is responsible for 1 in every 6 deaths in the U.S. Risk
of sudden death from heart attack is 3 times higher for
smokers.
- 95% of all lung cancer is caused by smoking.
- Death from mouth cancer is 4 times higher for smokers.
- 1 of every 2 deaths from cardiovascular disease (veins and
arteries clog up) is caused by smoking.
- Only 4 cigarettes a day doubles your risk of deadly heart
attacks.
- Is smoking worth all this? No Way!
But, "you
have to smoke a long time before you get health
problems."
Not so... Smoking causes immediate health problems. For example:
Heartburn, Rapid pulse, coughing, nauseas, loss of stamina
(oxygen can't get into your blood as easy, it's blocked by carbon
monoxide in the smoke). Smokers...
- Become out of breath more quickly than nonsmokers.
- Sleep poorly.
- Get sick more often (because mucus piles up in the lungs and
germs don't get swept out.)
- Lose their sharp sense of smell AND taste.
- Smoking damages your health today and in the future!
But, "it's
MY BODY, who would I be hurting?"
Smoking harms every "body"! Secondhand smoke is smoke exhaled and
smoke from the burning cigarette. It is extremely dangerous to
anyone breathing it.
- A child's chance of getting chronic ear infections,
bronchitis (infection of the airways), pneumonia (lungs fill up
with fluid), and ASHTMA (lung spasms), increase when breathing
secondhand smoke repeatedly.
- A child's risk of getting lung cancer DOUBLES if the parent's
smoke!
- A spouse of a smoker is 34% more likely to get lung cancer
than a spouse of a nonsmoker!
- A nonsmoker exposed to long term secondhand smoke has a 1 in
6 chance of getting lung cancer!
- Others who breathe in secondhand smoke are breathing the
equivalent of 1 to 3 cigarettes a day!
- Smoking hurts the people you love!
But, "what
if that pregnant lady smokes?"
Smoking harms the unborn child! A woman who smokes while pregnant
harms her unborn baby in many ways.
- Smoking can cause: Miscarriages and premature birth.
- Low birth weight.
- Infant heart and lung disease.
- Increases the chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
- Chronic breathing problems in the infant.
- Physical and developmental abnormalities.
- Learning disabilities.
If you are pregnant and smoke, QUIT NOW!
Your baby's life depends on it!
But,
"don't most people smoke?"
Just read the signs! No smoking! Smokers are being kicked
out.
- Many airlines do not allow people to smoke on board.
- It is against the law to smoke in hospitals, clinics, and
medical buildings.
- 42 states restrict smoking in public places.
- 17 states forbid smoking in the workplace.
- Many foreign countries outlaw smoking in ALL public
places.
If you want to smoke... You will be separated from
your friends much of the time.
- In a restaurant you will have to sit in a different
area.
- In a government building or public school you have to LEAVE
the building to smoke.
- While your friends are busy having fun, you will be looking
for a place to smoke.
But, "is
it ever too LATE to quit?"
No 'BUTTS' about it! QUIT NOW! ...Remember...
If you don't smoke yet, DON"T START!
If you already smoke, STOP NOW!
- Within one year of quitting, the likelihood of developing
cardiovascular disease (veins and arteries clog up) declines
rapidly.
- Ten years after quitting, your risk of death from this
disease is almost the same as if you never started.
- There's no excuse for NOT quitting. There are 34 million
EX-smokers in the United States. These people quit smoking
forever!
- It's NEVER too late.
BUT, KNOW THIS: "light cigarettes" are a
lie.
Low tar and low nicotine cigarettes do not reduce the damages
of smoking, you simply smoke MORE to accommodate for the
difference.
