Don't BUY IT! Say NO to tobacco
advertising
Tobacco companies are looking for a few good lungs -
YOURS!!
Studies show that most smokers start smoking as teens. If people
don't start smoking as teens, they probably never will. DON'T BE
FOOLED! They don't care about your health, they just want your
money!
The tobacco industry spends:
- Over $11,200,000,000 billion PER YEAR
- Over $30,700,000 million PER DAY
- Over $700,000 PER HOUR
marketing its deadly products in the U.S. alone, much of this
reaching kids.
At this rate, the companies have spent $4,590,277,930 so far this
year (April 20th 2004).
Are you outraged by Big Tobacco's advertising tactics? Did you
know kids are twice as likely to remember tobacco
advertising?
1.) Tobacco companies put ads in magazines, on
billboards, and in convenience stores to attract new, young
smokers.
Ever wonder why? Studies show that most smokers start smoking as
teens. If people don't start smoking as teens, they probably
never will. Each day, thousands of smokers quit or die from
smoking related illnesses. Tobacco companies need to HOOK new,
young smokers to stay in business!
2.) Tobacco companies use young, good-looking
models to make smoking look fun and exciting.
Think sticking a cigarette in your face will help you stay thin
or make you look more popular? The truth is, SMOKING STINKS.
Smoking gives you lots of stuff, like bad breath, yellow teeth,
wrinkled skin, and hair that smells like a chimney. Plus you
cough like an old engine, and spit up grey mucus. Attractive and
sexy? YUCK!
3.) Tobacco companies sponsor car races, rodeos,
and sports events to make smokers look like winners.
Most real athletes don't smoke or use chewing tobacco. And thjose
that do usually want to quit. After all, cigarettes eventually
kill one out of three long-term users. You can't be a winner if
you're dead!
4.) Tobacco companies advertise with cartoon
characters so young people will recognize their
brands.
Cartoon characters don't die from smoking - People do! Talking
camels and sexy waitresses won't tell you that smoking causes
everything from mouth cancer to hardening of the arteries to
fatal heart attacks. They also won't be saying "Over 400,000
people will die this year from smoking our brand."
5.) Tobacco companies use "FREE STUFF" coupons to
trick people into buying more cigarettes.
Nothing is free. Someone smoking a pack a day will spend more
than $900 in a year. What would you do with all that money? Save
for a car? Buy new clothes? Is spending $900 worth a few dollars
of "free stuff?"
What Can You Do to Resist Tobacco Ads? Don't Buy
It! When you see an ad, ask yourself these
questions...
- Who is the ad for? What age? How can you tell?
- What is the ad trying to say about smoking? Is it true?
- Does the ad make it look like people who smoke are mature?
Cool? Adventurous? Popular?
- Will smoking really make a person feel better or look
better?
- Does the ad make you want to try smoking?
Then ask yourself...
Am I going to be fooled by tobacco ads? OR
Am I going to make decisions based on what I know is best for
me?
