| "I suspected my son was smoking when he was 14. I
couldn't help but smell smoke on his clothes. I asked him and
he admitted he smoked regularly. I was shocked. As a child he
would complain about smokers. He's a sharp kid and I know he
realizes the deadly effects of smoking." -Kaitlyn,

What To Say? What Can I Do?
Sometimes the truth comes out more slowly than Kaitlyn's
situation. Maybe some of your daughter's friends are smoking,
or your son's hair smells like smoke. These are signs that
your child may be smoking. What do you do?
- Stay calm. Start by asking questions about what's
going on. How long has she been smoking? Do her friends
smoke?
- Enforce the consequences. Follow through with the
rules you have set about smoking.
- Without lecturing, remind him of the nasty, negative, and
deadly effects of smoking. Remind him of the expense, how it
causes wrinkles, stunted growth, bad breath, and cancer. Remind
him that over 75% of people don't smoke, and that smokers are
unwelcome in most public places.
- Discuss addiction. The signs of addiction include;
strong urges to smoke, anxious and irritable when you can't
smoke, tried unsuccessfully to quit.
- Tell her it's likely that teens will become addicted
after just a week or two of smoking. Tell her most smokers
started as teens and were unable to quit. Nicotine is more
addicting than cocaine and heroin.
If you think she is addicted, take her to the family doctor to
help her find a quit program that has been successful with
teens.
