Knitting your way out of a bad habit: Gotta Try It! by Maryanne Shaffer Smoke screen: As a professional singer, I accepted early on that cigarettes were part of the business. I filled my fair share of ashtrays - to the tune of two packs a day. Saving my voice: Although I'd suffer bouts of bronchitis, my performance never suffered, so my bad habit continued until my mother remarked that I was "smoking my vocal chords." Images of leather and jerky supplanting my once-supple pipes finaaly got me to quit. Knitting needles replace cigarettes: I had learned how to knit when I was 13, and now I prized it more than ever. The calm, rhythmic movement of the needles and the tactile sensation of the wool helped curb my craving. More healthy habits: By helping me unravel my addiction, knitting gave me back my lung stamina. At age 37, I took up running. It was tremendously empowering for both my voice and my psyche! By age 40, I could run 10 miles and truly call myself an ex-smoker (now 17 years). Not just for grandmas: Notable knitters include Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Hillary Swank, Debra Messing, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Genie Francis. Start stitching: Find guidance, project ideas, and online camaraderie at www.prevention.com/links . Or visit your local craft store. Pull the wool over cravings!
